KOTA KINABALU: A syndicate found a novel way to sell stolen motorcycles — potential buyers were told that they were agents acting on behalf of the police to dispose of two-wheelers seized during anti-crime operations.
The syndicate would sell the motorcycles for between RM900 and RM1,200, mainly to farmers.
But their activities ended last week with the arrest in Ranau of six members of the syndicate known as the Mareh Gang.
Sabah CID chief Senior Asst Comm (II) Zainal Abidin Kasim said yesterday police were hunting down two more members of the gang which had been operating for the past three months.
SAC Zainal said police recovered 29 motorcycles, 19 of which had been reported as stolen.
“We are trying to locate the owners,” he said after Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim launched the Sabah police contingent’s official website www.sabahrmp.gov.my/pdrm.
